TORN

  • Scout 405 Roncesvalles Avenue Toronto, ON, M6R 2N1 Canada (map)

‘TORN’ is a self-referential project that discusses personal struggle through material exploration. Using screen-printed linen, trauma-based artist Olivia Mae Sinclair shares intimate images and text about her relationship with herself others. While the installation is auto-biopic, Olivia hopes others will feel empowered to share their own story or know they are not alone by sharing her trauma.

“I believe that even if my work doesn’t create “giant waves” or even “small ripples”, I know that somewhere out there, someone must relate to my books. Through re-telling of narratives, I am assured that thoughts and memories in my head have been transferred through my arms, down my fingers, and into the fabric. Once my thoughts have been re-processed through language, they have no longer have a hold over me.”

Olivia uses “Sloppy Craft” as her methodology. Sloppy Craft has become a way for her to express traumatic memory and heal by making. The decline of mental health and well-being is mirrored through material and concept.

“My work allows me to process agony and take a stand against intrusive thoughts. Making, sewing and collaging is a (mostly) soundless protest against the violence that replays in my mind.”
